The moon sets in the West. In the West is Amida Buddha's paradise. Thus, the moon and mountain represent Buddhist truth, law, Nirvana, etc.

月のゆく
山に心を
ゝくりいれて
やみなるあとの
身をいかにせん

yama ni kokoro wo
wokuri irete
yami naru ato no
mi wi ika ni sen
Translation #98:
My mind I send
with the moon
that goes beyond the mountain,
but what of this body
left behind in darkness?
