The summer grasses—
Of the brave soldiers' dreams
The aftermath.

In the summer of 2008, I studied at the Inter-University Center in Yokohama, Japan and stayed at a guest house in Kamakura. The name of the class to which I was assigned is “natsu-kusa” or “summer grass.” The title suggests the impermanence of flourishing and fading in the material world, which is a very Kamakura sort of thing to suggest. Collected here are the photographs and videos taken by my slowly breaking Sony DSC-T1 of temples, field trips, and so forth. For your web browser’s convenience, the collection has been split into two groups linked below. If you want full-sized copies of any of these photos or to contribute some photos of your own, please email me at carl at this domain. Thanks.

The grass withereth,
the flower fadeth:
because the spirit of the LORD
bloweth upon it:
surely the people is grass.

— Isaiah 40:7
草は枯れ、
花はしぼむ。
主の風が
吹きつけたのだ。
この民は草に等しい。

— イザヤ書 40:7
